Navigating and Editing a Data File
The computer screen can only display a small amount of a large data file. Navigating through a large amount of data can be awkward. Fortunately, the tool bar has helpful features for navigating and editing large data files.
From left to right:
- Jump to variable: This will move the display horizontally from left to right to a variable of interest.
- Jump to case: This will move the display downward to a particular case.
- Search for values
- Create a new case at the current position: This button inserts a new row for a new case.
- Create a new variable at the current position: This button inserts a new column for a new variable.
- Split file
- Weight file
- Show/hide value labels: This will toggle the values/labels for categorical variables. Clicking the button on this example will show or hide the male/female values for the Sex variable.
Let's say we need to insert or delete a case or a variable. Right-clicking on the case variable for a specific row will raise a pop-up menu with the option to insert or delete a case at that position. A similar feature is available for the columns.
